War Hero Max Rose vs America-hating Bigot Ilhan Omar?
This year has seen one of the strangest freshman Congressional classes in decades. The class's most prominent faces include local phenom Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who calls capitalism "irredeemable"; Michigan's Rashida Tlaib, who publicly supports the Boycott, Divestment, Sanction (BDS) movement against Israel; and Minnesota's Ilhan Omar, who gleefully demonizes Jews, Israel, and the American military.
Where does Democratic freshman Representative Max Rose, whose district includes all of Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn, fit into this madness? Rose’s life so far reads like a movie script. Decorated young war hero comes home, runs for Congress and beats the incumbent. He takes office with the more-radical politicians described above. He even politely calls Omar “friend.” But as the saying goes, with friends like these, who needs enemies?
Instead of hunkering down and doing the noble work he wants to do, Max finds himself thrust into a snakepit. The Democratic Party he’d probably hoped to find awaiting him in Congress -- the one he likely still remembers from his history books -- is gone. He watches in disbelief as the party of FDR, Truman, and JFK morphs into an ominous blend of anti-Semitism and strident anti-Americanism.
No doubt it’s difficult to "disrespect" Speaker Pelosi and urge her to do the right thing -- in this case invoking the moral imperative of removing Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee. Pelosi's leadership team, after all, decides who serves on which committees, who will rise within the ranks, and so on. If Rose isn't careful, he could jeopardize his whole future in the Democratic party. However, this may be a golden opportunity in disguise! If Rose positions himself as the one freshman Democrat willing to put principle above party and call for Omar's removal, he could start a seismic shift in the party away from the radical fringe and back toward the center.
When Omar’s vile comments about Jews first came to light, we had hoped that Max would show anti-Semitic attacks in New York and across the country are on the rise and will, no doubt, continue to soar so long as leaders lack the courage to speak out against those who spew hatred, whether on college campuses or in the halls of Congress itself.
Omar's slanderous attack on American soldiers
How much would it take to see the old Max -- the one who got a Purple Heart -- denounce these vipers? Will he join forces with other centrists and save the Democratic party before it’s too late?
For the good of the nation, not to mention the Democratic party, let's hope so. Stay tuned.
